Natalie Portman refuses to buy new clothes

Natalie is doing her part for the environment by not shopping.  She said she’s got like 20 pairs of jeans and 40 t-shirts and she’s not going to accumulate more.

I’ve got mixed feelings on this one.  I know we don’t need all those clothes and you know we don’t need them.  We know that it’s using up valuable resources and damaging the environment just to create them and haul them around the country and to find landfills for them when they’re out of date.

On the other hand it’s driving the economy.  So Natalie, what do we do when we have a gazillion people out of work because you stopped buying t-shirts.  There are cotton farmers, tractor companies, freight haulers, road workers, sailors, seamstresses, gas station owners, retail staff, UPS guys, designers, advertising companies, television production crews, super models, resale shops, and sanitation workers who are all counting on us to buy crap we don’t need.

Maybe Al Gore could help us out with this one.

  1. I doubt the industry will stop because people get smarter about what they buy… it has to happen, anyway. Quality, not quantity. Investing in classic pieces saves us $ in the long run, and saves the environment too! I think the point is to make smart choices, and to know when enough is enough. I think the environment and the fashion industry can coexist, but it will just have to adjust. Difficult, but not impossible.
